Beyond Tradition – The Power of Nature's Voices

The film Beyond Tradition tells the story of building bridges between convention and innovation. Three young singers from Switzerland, Norway and Georgia question their culture and take on the challenge of linking their roots with modern life. What is tradition? For the Swiss natural yodeller Meinrad Koch, it is a balancing act between tried-and-tested rituals and courageous innovation. He exchanges ideas with the Norwegian joiker Marja Mortensson about her yodel-like and originally shamanistic singing culture. In Georgia, Meinrad meets music student Ninuca Kakhiani. She not only grew up with traditional songs and Georgian yodelling, but also dealt with musical cultures beyond her own.
