Max Bernal (Bobby Cannavale) is a stand-up comedian - with difficulty and hardship, as his big breakthrough has always been a long time coming. His former wife Jenna (Rose Byrne) has long since put her feet up and left him together with their son Ezra (William Fitzgerald). So Max, now in his mid-40s, has little choice but to move back in with his stubborn father Stan (Robert De Niro). Then Ezra is expelled from school. Jenna thinks that the boy, who is probably autistic, should perhaps attend a special school after all. For Max, however, this is completely out of the question. In order to escape his ex-wife's plans and somehow also his own father, he simply grabs his son and drives off. On the road trip, the two get to know each other better and Max realizes that Ezra is much more like him than he previously thought...
