Few places symbolize the dawn of modernity with its expectations and upheavals better than the department store. It stands for the path towards a society in which needs are not only satisfied, but created. In Zurich, Franz Anton Jelmoli ushered in the new era with the construction of a spectacular glass palace on Bahnhofstrasse. Now, exactly 125 years later, Jelmoli will close its doors.

The film "Jelmoli - Biography of a Department Store" by Sabine Gisiger is made up of the biographical experiences of individuals: from the founding family to the families of the main shareholders to employees who worked at Jelmoli for decades and with passion and who still call themselves "Jelmolians" today.
The personal stories from the department store and the rich trove of archive material reflect major themes of the 20th century: urbanization, colonialism, women's emancipation, anti-Semitism, youth revolts and, finally, globalization and digitalization, which have made the display of goods from all over the world under one roof obsolete.
