In a world devastated by climate change, large areas of the Earth have become uninhabitable. As a result, some of the survivors have created a parallel world in which society strictly controls and optimizes life. Every aspect of life is monitored, including the evaluation of parenthood.

A successful couple is examined by an assessor for seven days to determine whether they are fit to be parents. Mia and Aaryan are nervous about their application to become parents, but they have everything they need. They live in a quiet, secluded house where Aaryan has a studio where he designs virtual pets after they were exterminated by government order, and Mia maintains a greenhouse and produces sustainable food as part of her work as a botanist.

The pair are assigned an assessor named Virginia, who asks them intrusive and uncomfortable questions about everything from how they first met to how often they have sex. But that's just the beginning, as Virginia subjects Mia and Aaryan to simulations of the potential horrors children can cause their parents. As the tests become increasingly confused and confusing, the right answers seem less obvious. The test for their right to have a child turns more and more into a nightmare for them.
