Description
WHEN THE LIGHT BREAKS
Iceland/Netherlands/Croatia/France 2024 / Director: Rúnar Rúnarsson
Una and Diddi, two young Icelandic art students, are newly in love. No one is allowed to know yet, especially not Diddi's longtime girlfriend Klara. A terrible accident changes everything. From one sunset to the next, Una encounters love, friendship, sorrow and beauty. An intense and visually powerful work by Rúnar Rúnarsson ("Volcano", "Echo").
Even the title suggests it: "When the Light Breaks" takes particular care with the light. The Icelandic summer light, as Rúnarsson himself writes about his film, stands symbolically for the protagonists' youth and as a promise of life and the certainty that the sun will rise again in the morning. "Slight changes in light play just as big a role as artfully staged reflections. Double images and reflections culminate in perhaps the most beautiful scene in the film: Una stands in the garden of a house and smokes, the camera shows her from behind. Suddenly, Klara appears from behind the glass, standing opposite Una and looking at her. Then Una turns around and both faces are superimposed, the one in front of the glass and the one behind it. They merge into a single face that contains features of both, as in Ingmar Bergman's "Persona" (1966). Klara smiles, and Una smiles back - a turning point in the difficult relationship between the two, who were once rivals and now mourn together." (Peter Gutting, film-rezensionen.de, 19.5.2024)
