Ftan – Mot Morel – Nalains (Roundtour)

From the visitor information centre at the PostBus stop Ftan, cumün, the route takes you up to the valley station of the Ftan Pitschen chairlift, past it and the car park to the first turnoff directly above the car park. Here the route leads right down to Ftan Pitschen, and east through the upper part of Ftan Pitschen. After the ascent from Munt Fallun to the last farm at the northeastern end of Ftan, the route turns right at the turnoff to Mot Morel and continues toward Scuol until below Nalains. The bench at the turn-off offers extensive views over Tarasp and the Lower Engadine Dolomites, Val Plavna and Val S-charl. Here the route branches off to the left off the hiking trail to Scuol, up to Nalains, where the high-voltage power lines are passed underneath again. To the left, or below the individual houses of Nalains, the route follows the path back to Ftan. On the way back from Ftan Pitschen to Ftan Grond we recommend that you cross Ftan Pitschen. This part of the village has a very well preserved traditional centre with venerable Engadine houses, so it is best to include it in the hike and cross it while walking toward Ftan Grond. At the cheese dairy and the village shop, the route branches off to the right and you reach the schoolhouse via an alley. Afterwards you return to the road between the Ftan-Prui chairlift and the PostBus stop Ftan, cumün.

About the history and the naming: Ftan was divided into two parts by a great avalanche in 1682. The big avalanche between Chaposch in Ftan Pitschen and Jordan in Ftan Grond is called "La Lavina" and still reminds us of the year of the catastrophe. In 1720 another large avalanche came down over the Mugliner area in Ftan Grond. The large catchment area between Mot da l'Hom and Piz Clünas is now secured, as can be seen from the numerous avalanche barriers and the protection forest above Prui.

From Ftan cumün to the valley station of the chairlift

Pass the valley station and the car park

Turn right at the junction above the car park

Cross the road and from the fountain Bügl sura cross Ftan Pitschen to the east

After the last farm, turn right at the fork towards Mot Morel

Continue towards Scuol until Nalains

Turn left towards Nalains

Cross under the high-voltage power lines

Return towards Ftan

Walk through Ftan Pitschen

Continue to Ftan Grond

Turn right at the cheese dairy and the village shop

Continue to the schoolhouse and the PostBus stop
